~Leh-2010 ~ Biggest Road trip of ma life


WE DID IT......... We drove 3000 KMS, 8 riders,6 bikes, 12 dayz, 6states
Let me start day wise, and for pics I ll upload max. I can, but I was writing from office so might be difficult.

Leh- Ladakh, a dream destination for me, My younger bro, who is right now 23 and already been on the same route in July, 2004 (that time he was 17) and when I heard stories from my bro, I was thrilled and waiting for my turn.
They all were in under NCC unit and patrol is sponsored by NCC unit, They were 6 bikers, and had Karizma, pulsar and discover too, they didn’t carry much money, and if I remember correctly dad only gave him Rs 2000/- and still he returned some bucks from it,

Lets back to my journey, We initially planned in end of April, but later on shifted to May then finally 18 June, 2010, as we all were working in office & and had to apply for leaves,

As I took initiative to talk to my HR, dept regarding sponsoring few things to our ppt, so Me and Sumanta went to HR, and describe our trip and he said to discuss same with Management and finally they were agreed for fleece Jackets which you all will find we were wearing so called VOITH.
Finally date has come 18 June 2010, again earlier we plan to leave in evening after office & will stay @ Chandigarh. but if we start in evening and that too in friday, it was dam sure that we will face a lot of traffic jams in delhi and its border area,


DAY 1(18 June, 2010) 1330 hrs:- we 5 bikers ( Me, Devender, Sumanta, Sandesh and Adrian) starts from our office ( Sector 59, Noida). we had full tank to our bikes at Indian Oil patrol pump on NH24, then we met my frd AMAN (1430 hrs) who join us @ Azadpur by-pass as he was coming from gurgaon, traffic was less so manage to get 80-85 kmph avg on NH-1,

We took halt @ Nilokheri ( it remind me my old time, I was stayed during my NCC time and we had NIC (National Integration camp) for 14 dayz, then via Ambala we reached Chandigarh as I was familiar with road so didn’t face any problem. we crossed CHD. around 2100 hrs and reached ropar within next 1 hr, earlier we plan to met my 1 more frd Hemant a.k.a. ANNA who came from Patiala, but due to single road we planned to stay in ropar only, but later on we found that this city only have 3 hotel & 1 youth hostel and all were packed, we all r hungry and waiting to lie down, finally ANNA’s local frd ask somebody and we found guest house type on NH 21. it was ok type and charged 1200 for Cooler room J.

Day2(19june 2010):-
We start around 0530 hrs and we met a group of ppl who also leading towards Leh.
it’s a sunny day so we enjoy our driving, also met a lot of Punjabi guys who driving without any safety gears not even helmet and moving towards Manikaran Sahib ( famous religious spot of Sikhs, who having hot springs).

We managed to reach kullu around 1600hrs, out of 6 bikes only 4 able to reach there, rest 2 bikes
Darshan a.k.a SHASTRI and ANNA drive very slowly, Both didn’t have experience for hill driving and its ANNA’s 1st bike trip ( that too to LEH J)so we have to wait them all the time, so when we reached kullu city, we just cross it & when Satluj was at our right side we parked our bikes near to stream of river and took bath in chilled water and meanwhile both our biker came, & now we decided to drive in group becoz after that if we get any problem we will not meet our planned destinations.

We reached manali around 1830 hrs and here we got 1st bike tire puncher on AMAN’s bike, just near the main Market & so he stayed there for tire puncher and rest moved to search hotel, we booked a hotel just 4-5 kms next to hadimba temple, it was a huge room and we all 8 manage to stay in a single room, and it was a chilled night .

Here I would like to highlight dry fruit, it may be a strange but highly recommended by my younger brother.

Day 3(20 june2010):-

This time we planned to start earlier to that we would not struck in tourist traffic, but we r lacked of our commitment and we started around 0615hrs and we had problem in Adrian bike, it took a lot of time to start. finally we started and as we know too much tourist traffic and its was too sunny day, but for safer side we take out our rain coats,

Around in 1000hrs we reached Rohtang La @13050 feet, it was a happy moment for all, that finally it feel like that we are on biggest and memorable trip.

We didn’t waste much time and continue ahead, when we going down from Rohtang, we shocked to see that it was cool and clam, and No Tourist !!!
Now its time to get something for our empty tummy, we took breakfast and then we got 1 more tire puncher, this time BULL 500 (ANNA’s bike) but we have puncher kit, it hardly took 20-25 mins to finish this task, then we procced ahead towards TANDI.
Till time we didn’t met any bikers coming from leh side, so we still have doubt that road was open or not, but at tandi, we met few foreigner bikers, who claim that they were first riders who cross Baralacha and this pass was closed from last few days,

Now we took breath of relase and plan to stay @ Sarchu and next day direct to leh, but we met same group which met us @Roper early morning, that guy I didn’t remember the same, suggest us to stay at Keylong or Jispa, and next day stay at sarchu, because on the way it will be very beautiful and don’t miss it.
We take it optional and continue our journey and we manage to reach at darcha around 1730 hrs, here we stop at police check post. The person over there suggest us to stay at darcha and I said him blindly that we planning to reach near baralacha or next to it for night stay, he was shocked to hear that and then said at Baralacha will be fully covered with snow and u ll not get any accommodation there, that persons told us that few jeeps starts early from manali and in evening they reached Leh.
finally we stay in tents just in front of Darcha police post,
We met a punjabi group of boys and 2 guys from Bangalore.

Day 4 (21 june, 2010),

This time we made a biggest mistake of the journey that we start earlier morning from Darcha and that too around 0530 hrs, when we cross Zing Zing bar and entered Baralacha, the water on road got freeze and our tire got slipped and I think only Sumanta able to cross it withour falling down, rest all have taste of snow J. After that when we reached Baralacha, we love the whole view, fully covered with snow.
Then around 1330 hrs we reached Sarchu, and planning for stay, here I want specially thanks to BCMTouring site, from where I got useful map and we plan to stay at Pang, so then on the way we crossed Gata loops and met a lot tourist vehicles as they might came to know about road opening status,

Then just after Lachulung-La, a car crossed and and warned us that ahead river was flowing above the road, so be carefully while crossing the road, and it was lillte bit difficult to crossing it, and finally reached pang, and shifted into a tent, now here I came to know what is AMS, I felt something wrong in my body, and hardly took 1 chapti and slept.

Day 5 (22 june, 2010),
Now we know that we are very close to Leh, we start 0730 hrs and then we hit Morey planes, drive we awesome, then its time for Tanglang-la, here we met a lot of bikers who came from leh, then finally we were landed on plan road the saw rumptse, who took deep breath finally we were very close to our dream place, then its time for Leh, and reached around 1700hrs, and now looking for hotel or guest house, we met a lot travel agents, at last Mr. Parvez (09419179149) M/sLadakh Eco-Adventures, provide us very furnished and fully loaded guest house in Rs.500 per room and we took 4 rooms on Old Fort road, then we ask for permit, he said in 100 per head he ll manage the permit so we gave him 800 and said to ready permit tomorrow morning.

Day 6 (23 june,2010),
Next morning were straight moved to Sharma automobile, I think I don’t need to explain about him, but there was huge rush, but finally we changed engine oil and small tuning of bike, Then we got call from Mr. Parvez that passes were ready, please collect the same, but when we reached over there, he informed us, due to land sliding K-top was closed, we plan to visit local and then next day will move to K-top.

But when we finished our brunch, we came to know that K-top was open, we planned to visit that day only, as we have very short time, here I want to mention a small but interesting incident happening with ANNA,

When we all reached at K-top, we found ANNA still didn’t reach, it was around 1 and half hour past, we asked few bikers also, even they don’t know, finally he reached there, and he was too red hot face in such chilled weather, everybody asked what happen, he was shocked “ it was hell, front disc automatically jammed, and I fall down 3-4 times due to it”, we all were shocked how it possible, I said u must apply it so it happens, he said he didn’t even touch it, then Adrian drove his bike & he also feel ok, but later on suddenly ANNA starts laughing loudly, we all asked what happen, then he said I DROVE ALL THE WAY WITH SIDE CLOCK OF 500 CC and we saw that lock had only 1 lose nut left other wise blow out,
He made history to drive world’s highest road on his Bull 500 with side lock.

Then we back to leh city and took rest, this time we try our dinner in SUN RISE Café. it was good but best part is that you will get beer.

Day 7& 8 ( 24 & 25 June 2010),
we start 0600 hrs from Hotel, and reached karu around 0700 hrs , we took our breakfast here at Punjabi Dhaba (Sanja Chula), paratha was good and u feel same taste of Punjab.
Then we were driving near Zingral, we found Shastri got badly problem due to AMS, he even can’t able to walk, he said to stay at MI (medical inspection) room, and rest proceed ahead, then we reached around 1430 hrs at Pangong Lake, No words to describe when we saw it,
Later on we found dark clouds in sky, but our group here dvide into 2 parts, (Sumanta, Sandesh, Darshan) and (Me, devender, aman, Adrian, Anna), we 5 stay in night at lake, as Adrian want to click some pics of lake in night, that was my horrible night of complete journey, I woke-up around 0100 hrs my head was paining like anything, I pray to god that all iz well,

Finally It was a sunny day at lake, and we start our journey back around 0800 hrs, as we reached TCP before Chang-La, it start raining, so we stop at TCP, army personal over there gave some dry fruits and hot water, and later on advise us not to stop at chang-la, as it might be snow fall starts.
And there words were true, as we crossed pass, snow fall just started, it was very difficult to drive that time, but any how we manage to reach shakti,

When we reached Leh, we moved to Shanti Stupa, and later on in evening we moved to local market for shopping,

Day 9 (26 june, 2010)

This time we were very late, we left leh around 1000hrs, and stay at Pathar Sahib Gurudwara, Adrian realize that his engine oil of below min required point, so went back to leh city for top up, meanwhile we continue our journey towards Srinagar highway, Adrian met us at Saspal, and we continue driving, again it was sunny day, but this time ANNA drive very slowly that we wait for him more than 1 hour, that was around 1745 hrs, we want to reach at kargil as early as possible so we planned me and adrain ll search hotel if we reach well in time ( as we drove faster than others),

But this time we had bad luck, we search whole kargil, all hotels was pack, and met 2 guys who told us that they get normal room in 2200 per night, and finally we got room in 400, but we know how stay into it,

Day 10 ( 27 june, 2010)
we start around 0700 hrs from kargil, and stop at kargil war memorial, and took our breakfast there,
Then we crossed Zojila pass, it was not too bad as earlier I review from a lot of ppl, then we saw Amarnath Yatra’s tent at Baltal, and hit the good road which lead towards Sonamarg, we took lunch out there and this ANNA again didn’t reach along with us, so we wait for him more than 1.5 hours, and then we ask local about Srinagar city condition, they said it still under curfew, and suggest us to continue thro by-pass and stay near by Jawahar tunnel, they suggest Qazigund, so we planned according to condition in Srinagar, & as we travel from Srinagar, we found same problem what we think, so we prefer to stay ahead of it,
Finally we enter Qazigund and found a Ok type Hotel, he charges 500 rs.

Day 11 ( 28 june 2010) we start from Qazigung around 0700 hrs and stay at Titanic View,
Then via Patnitop, we reached Udampur 1330 hrs, again here we wait for ANNA for 1 hour. as NH1D was single and we met a lot of amaranth yatris,
We asked local ppl if any short cut, someone suggest to take left turn from Udampur to straight form Dhar road, and we ll hit kathua.

And we took that road, and it was hardly 70 kms and directly cut Jammu city and hit Pathankot,
Now it was around 1630 hrs and we plan to go directly till Jalandhar ( as it was my home town).
And finally Me and devender stay at my home, rest Adrian, Anna & aman stay at by-pass of jalandhar, Aman & Anna will go to Patiala & Adrian will continue the journey till delhi.

Thanks to God that we didn’t met any rain or snow all the way, & it was really a wonderful time of my life…

But few comments as per my view,

- Always ask local ppl
- Never go in unknown group
- Never go in huge group
- If u in group then listen everybody

Frankly speaking I done a lot of group bike trips, but I was not much happy, if u comfortable then max. 2 & that too your best friend then driving will be remarkable,

In the end, if any mistake in writing and any spell mistake, please forgive me, & also I am wiritng whole travel log from office, so pics can’t upload & youtube video,
